She would become the first Vermont artist featured in Spruce Peak’s Peak Vermont program, putting 250 people into the chairs at Spruce Peak.

“It was a creative event more than a musical event,” Olson said. “It created the seed of what grew and developed.”

Bernstein played Spruce Peak again this month, and Olson beamed as he said, “She’s a world-class artist today. I believe we contributed to that. I think that’s a terribly important thing to do for a community.

http://www.stowetoday.com/this_week/arts/spruce-peak-director-will-step-down-this-year/article_e52b921e-0a5f-11e7-9142-d7bb87ddfd76.html
Audrey Bernsteintag:audreybernsteinjazz.com,2005:Post/46202692017-03-07T14:40:55-05:002017-03-07T14:40:55-05:00Vermont Publie Radio - Art Hounds - Audrey Bernstein
Art Hounds: Photography, Audrey Bernstein And Circus Arts
By Mary Williams • Feb 23, 2017

Saturday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center in Stowe: Jazz musician Audrey Bernstein performs standards and originals, accompanied by some of Vermont’s finest jazz musicians, with Friday Night Jazz host Reuben Jackson introducing the program. James and Pam Shaw, who were celebrating their new movie, “Lucky Stiff,” which also stars Jason Alexander and our own Cheyenne Jackson. For extra-added pleasure, Nikki even threw us back to her thrilling performance as Eponine in the revival of Les Miserables, and sang a perfect “On My Own!” The wildly talented James family (aka “The Florida VonTrapps”), each performed for us, and we sure hope to see more of Jeremy, Shalisa, Jason, Julian, Ashley and Paige! Spencer Day got us all swingin’ with his jazzy performance, as did Audrey Bernstein. There were some swell standard-singers, some Broadway babies, and a few folks we just can’t categorize! Around midnight, my pal Darren Criss and his gf Mia Swier bounded into Birdland just in time to catch mega-tappers John Manzari and Luke Hickey literally punishing the parquet! Darren got into the spirit and sang a jazzed-up “Almost Like Being In Love,” making his “Glee” fans swoon. Anyone who can shriek out the Hedwig score eight times a week, then croon a standard on his night off is OK by me!
http://www.traversecitywebdesign.com/castparty/Cast_Party_Newsletter/2015/07092015/Cast_Party_Newsletter_07092015.html

Join the fun this Monday too, as Audrey performs for her father and family at Jim Caruso's Cast Party at Birdland - 7.13.2015
Audrey Bernsteintag:audreybernsteinjazz.com,2005:Post/37738392015-07-10T20:59:28-04:002015-07-10T20:59:28-04:00Dynamic, Cleverly Erudite Jazz Chanteuse Audrey Bernstein Brings a Killer Band to the Rockwood
New York Music Daily 7/10/2015

A little New York music history: back in the early zeros, one of the best bands playing around what was then an incredibly fertile Lower East Side rock scene was Douce Gimlet. With frontman Joe Ben Plummer’s kitchen-sink songwring – sad country ballads, catchy janglerock anthems, and droll, cinematic intrumental miniatures – the band is long overdue to be rediscovered by a new generation. Why aren’t they better remembered? Probably because so little of their music exists online.

One of the most popular parts of their live set would be when baritone saxophonist Paula Henderson would lead them into a saucy stripper vamp and Plummer would bring up a special guest, “The songbird of the night time, who lights up the Manhattan skyline…the beloved Audrey Rose.” And Audrey Bernstein would take the stage and join in on a fetching duet on The Wedding Song, a slow, plaintive country ballad. And although Bernstein isn’t a country singer – she’s a jazz chanteuse, and a mighty good one – she’d knock it out of the park, night after night.

The years went by, the group disbanded and then Plummer died under cloudy circumstances that were never properly investigated. Meanwhile, Bernstein moved to Los Angeles and became one of the most fascinating, individualistic jazz singers around. What makes her different? For one, she writes her own songs. And you know how some jazz songbirds sing everything the exact same way? Lovey-dovey boudoir overkill, right? Bernstein sings in character: she’s a great storyteller, she mines new and unexpected content from old standards and she’s practically a different singer from number to number. She can go from misty, to disarmingly clear and direct, to coy and enticing, depending on how the story goes. As much as that takes fearsome vocal technique, what’s most impressive is how she puts those chops to work to deliver an emotional wallop…or just a wink, or a chuckle. She’s put together a tremendously good band: Brian Charette taking a rare turn on piano, plus Sean Harkness on guitar, Daniel Glass on drums, and Steve Doyle on bass for a show on July 12 at 8:30 PM at the third stage at the Rockwood. Cover is $10 plus a $10 drink minimum.

Bernestein’s latest album is Alright, Okay, You Win, streaming at her webpage. One prime example of Bernstein as storyteller is how suspensfully she builds the litany of images in Jobim’s The Waters of March up to an ending that’s just short of ecstatic, bouncing along with some neatly counterinituitive drumming from Geza Carr and Joe Capps’ gently purist guitar. Likewise, her airy, wary approach to Detour Ahead, over Tom Cleary’s similarly judicious, subtly apprehensive piano: that it’s not fullscale Lynchian noir is what draws you in, waiting for something to jump out of the wee-hours shadows. Bernstein and Cleary follow the same trajectory, from overcast to tenderly misty, on Melody Gardot’s Love Is Easy.

Bernstein’s take of Comes Love is both rich with history and a clinic in subtlety: she gives it a matter-of-fact, vintage Molly Picon charm that harks back to the song’s klezmer roots, but without going over the top into vaudeville. Bernstein’s lone original here, Oh the Money, is arguably the album’s best track, a darkly scurrying, bitingly direct blues shuffle.

Bernstein kicks off the album with a jauntily insistent jump-blues take of Too Close for Comfort with scampering trumpet from Ray Vega and piano from Cleary. ‘Deed I Do gets a more dynamically rich interpretation than most oldtimey swing singers give it, Bernstein maxing out her bluesy wiggle-room, alto saxophonist Michael Zsoldos maintaining the vibe. She goes even further, Dinah Washington-style, in that direction on the title track, trumpeter Joey Sommerville pushing a joyously dixieland-inspired horn arrangement.

Bernstein channels raw, undiluted duende on a moody take of You Don’t Know What Love Is, yet with a restraint that makes it all the more poignant, matched by John Rivers’ carefully pulsing bass and Cleary’s lingering, angst-tinged lines. The album’s balmiest number is the steadily swinging You Made Me Love You, lowlit by Sommerville’s sax; and them Bernstein goes unexpectedly chirpy and clever as it winds out. There’s also a bonus track, a nebulously low-key guitar-and-vocal take of I Want a Sunday Kind of Love.

Fun fact: Bernstein’s sense of adventure extend to the kitchen. She’s got a bunch of tempting recipes here.

While the physical medium has changed over the years, from tapes to CDs to Spotify playlists and the like, few gestures are as sweet and time-tested as curating a playlist for your dear someone. Sure, flowers and chocolates are nice. But making a mixtape takes time and, more importantly, thought to ensure that you send just the right message. In that regard, in our admittedly biased opinion, the mixtape remains the ultimate romantic expression.
So here's a little mix we made just for you, consisting entirely of local tunes released in the last year or so. Why? Because we like you.
"The Best Is Yet to Come," Audrey Bernstein - One of the oft-overlooked aspects of a good mix is flow. Especially when pulling from so many styles of music, easy transitions are paramount. On Friday evening, noted up-and-coming jazz singer Audrey Bernstein will be having a listening party for her debut release “Audrey Bernstein Loves Blue.” She’ll also informally perform a few tracks from it live, which should be a real treat, as her singing has been referred to by various media outlets as “sublime.” “both fresh and familiar” and “classic and endearingly sexy.” The BYOB, cocktail-party style affair begins at 7:30, with the new release available for purchase."

http://www.bit.ly/14x7ehu

Audrey Bernsteintag:audreybernsteinjazz.com,2005:Post/15243332013-06-10T01:00:00-04:002013-06-10T01:00:00-04:00Local Music Spotlight, The Point Radio FM 6/9/2013the point radio 6-9-2013 by Audreybernsteinjazz on SoundCloud ...
